Massimo Candela, Senior Software Engineer of the Global IP Network division at NTT Ltd. presented during RIPE 81 on the topic of Finding and Using Geofeed Data. In his presentation, Massimo explains how operators can setup geofeed files in a way that the geolocation data can be automatically discovered for correcting wrongly geolocated addresses.
The geographic position of an IP address is important in many situations: automatic language selection, the offering of specific digital content, network troubleshooting are just a few examples. Unfortunately, the lack of both standards and practices led to a heterogeneous ecosystem of geolocation providers, datasets, and in-house solutions that are often out of sync and difficult to update. Massimo has proposed a new way to declare geofeed files in routing policy specification language (RPSL) and how these files can be automatically and prudently consumed.
